“I Want To Be The One You Keep”
It’s okay to feel the way that you feel, the way that it feels when you hear it for the first time. And you stop and you think and you feel what you hear. Don’t worry…it happened. If you’re reading this, it happened to you. But of course you’re biased…you like good music…you have to if you felt it. You almost couldn’t believe you were hearing really, really good music from a band only two EPs old. A band that rises above the deluded and disinfected sound of the now. Or, if you didn’t…that’s okay. Loving music isn’t for everyone. Someone has to sell their older sister’s Delmonas and Angels LPs at yard sales so that Violet Vector and the Lovely Lovelies can buy them.
EP II, the latest recording from Chapel Hill psych-pop, garage-rock superstars Violet Vector and the Lovely Lovelies, is a sonic beam of sunshine that both recaptures AND reinterprets the charming sounds of past perfections. Lying somewhere between Piper at the Gates of Dawn era Pink Floyd and the fearless charge of Sleater-Kinney, this 5 song EP contains enough singalong shout-out choruses to battle a pack of rabid cheerleaders, while at the same evoking a rainbow flavored, other-worldly mysticism that leaves the listener feeling lost in some technicolor garden, in a sonic landscape far away, wearing a crown of glittering flowers.
Violet Vector and the Lovely Lovelies began their foray into the exciting world of girl-pop psychedelia in 2006 under the direction of songwriter Amanda Brooks. With a combined love of classic 1960s song textures and the determination to have a ton of fun, the band soon developed a loyal fan base within the exhilarating musical climate of Chapel Hill, NC. After receiving critical success for their debut (EP I) VVLL undertook the recording of EP II, quickly thereafter. Produced by the band, recorded in three different North Carolina studios, and mixed by the eminent Brian Paulson (Slint, Beck, Wilco), the 5 songs of EP II are sure to bring a smile to even the saddest of faces. Somewhere between the swirling organs, dirty guitars, girl-group harmonies and hand claps, a lush kaleidoscope of melody spins around and around, eventually exploding into a joyful exuberance that begs you to make your favorite dream a reality.
